European white oak is chosen for the stool for its ability to withstand the harder-than-typical use that bar seating receives — the repeated impact of users sitting down and standing up, the leverage forces applied to the backrest by people leaning back with their feet hooked on the footrest, and the spill exposure from drinks and food that is higher at kitchen counter seating than in any other seating position in the home. The stool frame is assembled using wedged through-tenon joints at the seat-to-leg and footrest-to-leg connections — a joint design that becomes mechanically tighter with use rather than loosening over time, because the wedge is driven into the tenon in the direction that increases the joint’s interference fit as seasonal wood movement occurs. The seat is a solid oak disc of 35cm diameter with a gentle saddle-shaped hollow machined into the upper face that positions the occupant’s weight at the centre of the seat without requiring a cushion for comfortable seating periods up to two hours.
